Store meteorites in a dry, low-humidity environment. Ideally, use an airtight container with desiccant packs. Iron meteorites are especially vulnerable to oxidation. Avoiding moisture is key.

Yes, but it’s best to handle them with clean, dry hands or gloves. Oils and moisture from skin can accelerate corrosion, particularly on polished or etched surfaces.

For most meteorites, a soft brush or cloth is sufficient. Avoid using water on iron meteorites. If needed, clean with 99% isopropyl alcohol and immediately dry thoroughly.

Some collectors apply a microcrystalline wax (like Renaissance Wax) to iron meteorites for protection. Avoid permanent coatings unless you’re experienced or consulting a conservator.

This is typically caused by chloride contamination or high humidity. It can lead to a condition known as “pyrite disease” or “rusting.” Proper storage and occasional treatment with alcohol or rust inhibitors can help.

Use inert display materials such as acrylic, glass, plastic, or stainless steel. Avoid wood or fabric bases that retain moisture. Keep displays out of direct sunlight and high-humidity areas.
